classes
To see a list of all the classes you're currently teaching, click on the Teach tab.
To register a new class, click the 'Register new class' option and select the kind of class to teach.
Then fill in the simple form.
Your class is then ready to teach. The class overview provides a description of the class, a link to its enrollment page, its schedule, and other useful information. The resources section indicates how many relevant resources are already in our library. It's easy to incorporate these resources into lessons.
lessons
To see the lesson plan, click on the lessons tab. You can easily add, indent and reorder lessons from this page.
example lesson
To see a lesson, click on its title. Here's lesson 6 in the Solar System class. Each lesson has a title, some narrative, a set of resources, and arrows for moving back and forth through the lessons. Resources can be videos, web sites, audio clips, images, quizzes, exercises, experiments - any kind of educational material on the web. Our resources section allows you to locate, track, contribute, and review educational resources by topic.
student roster
To see a list of enrolled students, click on the students tab. To send a message to the selected students, click on the 'Send message' option. Our system never reveals the email address of any member, and members have the option of forwarding messages to their email account.
student attendance
To see a record of student attendance, click on the attendance tab. Once recorded, it's easy to edit or delete attendance records. There is also gradebook integration that allows you to award points based on attendance.
calendar
To see a calendar of all class events, click on the calendar tab. The calendar provides a monthly view of all class events, including lessons and assignment due dates.
assignments
To see a list of all class assignments and their associated grades, click on the assignments/grades tab. This section also allows you to add, edit and delete class assignments. Students are automatically alerted when a new assignment is given. There are currently five types of assignment: freeform (respond to a question with text and optional attachments), quiz (take an online quiz), offline (such as taking a traditional paper test or reading a book), survey (gather responses to a series of questions), and attendance (award points based on student attendance). The gradebook supports several weighting schemes and also displays statistics.
graphing scores
To see a graph of scores, click on one of the bar chart icons. Here is a graph of the number of students against the final score as a percentage.
rubric
You can associate a rubric with an assignment so it can be quickly and consistently scored online by checking the criteria that are met.
forum
To see the class forum, click on the forum tab. It's a threaded forum which means you can easily see the entire flow of a discussion about a particular subject. In addition, you can subscribe to the forum via email. The teacher can moderate the forum and delete postings if necessary.
Here's an example of a threaded discussion.
chat
To see a list of the class chat rooms, click the chat tab.
To enter a chat room, click on its name. The chat room pops up in a separate window and displays a list of its occupants plus a record of the conversation. New messages are displayed within seconds to all the other occupants.
wiki
To see the class wiki pages, click the wiki tab.
Anyone in the class can edit a wiki page. You can see the previous versions and revert to a previous one if required.
debates
You can create one or more debates to encourage critical thinking skills.
Each debate has a proposition that students can support, challenge, and vote for.
feeds
To see a list of the class news feeds, click on the feeds tab. The teacher can add one or more news feeds, either from our community set of feeds or a brand new feed. Brand new feeds are automatically added to the community set of feeds.
blogs
The teacher and each student gets a class blog that is only accessible to others in the class. If a student is shy they can let only the teacher read their blog.
transcripts
You can see transcripts for all your students by clicking on the transcripts tab. Each transcript lists the points and grades for each assignment in the class together with the final result.
quizzes
The quizzes tab allows you to contribute quizzes and provides instructions on how to give a quiz assignment.
